Top Five Hill Country Trout Flies

The Texas Hill Country is known for its beautiful rivers and streams, making it a popular destination for trout fishing in cold water creeks and rivers. The most asked question we hear at THCFF is "What trout flies are best".

Listed below are arguably the five most popular trout fly patterns often used in this area of Texas:

1. "Woolly Bugger": This versatile fly can imitate a variety of prey, including baitfish and insects. It's effective in both still and moving water.

2. "Pheasant Tail Nymph": This classic nymph pattern is great for mimicking mayflies and is particularly effective in the spring when trout are feeding on emerging insects.

3. "Zebra Midge": A small and simple pattern that is effective for catching trout, especially in colder months when fish are feeding on midges.

4. "Elk Hair Caddis": This dry fly pattern is great for imitating adult caddisflies and can be effective during the caddis hatch in the Hill Country.

The Texas Hill Country Fly Fishers Club sponsors a monthly Fly Tying Night says club tying chairman Jack Bartell. Each month we try to feature a different fly of local interest and a different fly tier to demonstrate.

Don Anderson will be demonstrating the EP Baitfish, a fly is a simple yet highly effective fresh or saltwater fly that can be easily customized with different colors of fiber, or even permanent marker.

Trout Lease 2025

TROUT LEASE 2025

The 2025 Trout Lease program will be kicking off around the end of November. Pease read each club newsletter as it will be giving instructions on how to access the lease program.

Lease registration is entirely online. You must be able to access your online member account and have a valid club membership through 2025 to be eligible to register for trout lease 2025. ONLY CLUB MEMBERS WITH MEMBERSHIP PAID THROUGH DEC 15, 2025 WILL RECEIVE A LEASE INVITATION EMAIL WHICH, INCLUDES A UNIQUE LINK TO THE LEASE REGISTRATION PAGE. Every invitation link is unique and only works with the intended member's login id. Invitation links must never be shared. Doing so can cause the intended club member to be locked out of the registration system.

Of course, not every club member desires to join the lease program. But it is a fact we have only 80 lease slots available (5 more than last year) and about 130 club members. Typically the lease sells out about two weeks from when registration is opened up.

TROUT LEASE 2022

The 2022 Trout Lease program will be kicking off around the first of November. Space is limited and we have about 50 new club members this year. Please read each newsletter as it will be giving instructions on how to access the lease program.

Lease registration will be online this year. You must be able to access your online member account to register for the trout lease.

You also must have previously extended your Club membership through the 2022 year BEFORE YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO REGISTER FOR THE TROUT LEASE. We highly suggest that you practice accessing your account before lease registration begins.

Lindsey Hollin hosts 2nd Women's Fishing Event

Lindsey Hollin from Texas Hill Country Fly Fishers is hosting a second women's event. This event, BEGINNING FLY FISHING, is both educational and a social event which will be held at Lady Bird Johnson City Park.

Teaching the class will be Professional Fly Fishing Guide & Instructor, Capt. Stacy Lynn in a low pressure learn-at-your-own-pace environment.

It takes a lot of volunteers to support an active Fly Fishing Club. THCFF would wither and die without our many volunteers and supporters contributing their time and skills to make club projects a success.

New Couples Membership Level

The THCFF has responded to the growing trend of "Couples Fly Fishing" by adding a couples membership type. This new membership level affords two full voting memberships to couples or partners living in one household. The additional household membership also gives full access to all THCFF event to both members.

This represents a savings of $30 over purchasing two individual memberships.
